Age: 21 to 30 years (as on July 01, 2009) [relaxation as per rules]
Educational Qualification: Bachelor's degree of any recognised university with at least one of the subjects namely:
1. Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science
2. Botany
3. Chemistry
4. Geology
5. Mathematics
6. Physics
7. Statistics
8. Zoology
OR a Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Forestry or in Engineering or an equivalent qualification.
Number of attempts: The maximum number of attempts permissible to different categories of aspirants, who are otherwise eligible, will be as
(i) General Category - 4 attempts
(ii) OBC - 7 attempts
(iii) SC/ST - No limit
Application Form: The candidates must apply in the Common Application Form devised by the Commission for its examinations, which can be purchased from the designated Head Post Offices/ Post Offices throughout the country against cash payment of Rs. 20/- only. In case of any difficulty in obtaining the Application Forms from the designated HPOs/POs the candidates should immidiately contact the Post Master or UPSC "Form Supply Monitoring Cell"

Pattern of SET Test:
SET will be of three hours duration consisting of two sections
Section 'A': 100 questions to test the candidate's knowledge in the subject of their B.E./ B.Tech. (for Engg. discipline) or MSc ( for Science Discipline)
Section 'B': 50 questions to test the candidate's ability in analytical and qualitative skills, current affairs and general awareness to test the aptitude and scientific knowledge required for Applied Research & Development.
